Al Scarface Capone Brief History Part 1

Was Al-Capone raised up as a conqueror or hero of the underworld in United States?

I have been working in AML & CFT Division since 2007 as AML Compliance Officer. I think the development of my career as well as the global action against prevention of money laundering comes from the brutal activities of Al- Scarface- Capone the father of money laundering.

If Al –Capone was not born in New York then the global activities against prevention of money laundering was not seen and I can’t develop my career in the AML field. I am writing up the mobster's life history in 3 parts.

Maximum mobsters based on New York in the early 20th Century came from impoverished backgrounds; but this was not the case for the mythical Al Capone. Far from being a poor immigrant from Italy who bowed to crime to create a living, Capone was from a reputable, proficient family.

Al Scarface Capone Brief History Part 1

Al Capone (Alphonse Capone, and known as Scarface) born on January 17, 1899 in Brooklyn, New York, to Italian immigrants Gabriele and Teresina (Teresa) Capone and the fourth of their nine children.

From all well-known accounts, Capone's childhood was an ordinary one. His father was a barber and his mother stayed home with the children. In a youthful predicament in a brothel-saloon, a young ruffian slashed Capone with a knife or razor across his left cheek, which later earned him the nickname of "Scarface".

Like many immigrant families at the time, the Capone children often dropped out of school early to help earn money for the family. Al Capone remained in school until he was 14 and then left to take a number of odd works.

On December 30, 1918, Capone wedded Mae Josephine Coughlin, who shortly before their wedding had given birth to his son, Albert Francis ("Sonny") Capone. The couple lived in Brooklyn before moving to Amityville, Long Island, to be close to "Rum Row," a line of ships that anchored beyond the three-mile limit to off-load their cargoes of alcoholic beverages onto speed boats during national prohibition (1920-1933).

After a short stay in Baltimore, Capone moved to Chicago, where Johnny Torrio had just inherited the throne as crime-king of the city after his boss, "Big Jim" Colosimo, was murdered by Frankie Yale in 1920.

Torrio offered Al and his brother positions managing two brothels, and after a year, Al was put in charge of the Four Deuces, Torrio's head of operations. At the Four Deuces, it is said, the basement was used to torture men with information valuable to the Torrio-Capone force, while upstairs prostitutes offered their services to politicians and mobsters alike.

After the election of reformer William Dever to the mayor's office of Chicago, it became increasingly difficult to run rackets in Chicago, and so the Torrio- Capone camp decided to move operations to the suburb of Chicago.

In Chicago, Al installed his brothers into positions of power, Frank taking charge of the local government and Ralph opening a brothel. Al opened a gambling joint. The Capones eventually gained control of the city, but his brother Frank was shot and killed by the Chicago Police Department while he was bullying a number of election workers on Election Day.

Torrio was eventually tricked into capture during a meeting with another mobster, Dion O'Banion, at an illegal brewery to purchase stocks in the building. Torrio went to jail and O'Banion bragged about the deception.

O'Banion was assassinated. With him out of the picture, Capone took over his bootlegging territory. After an assassination attempt by O'Banion's men, Torrio went to jail for nine months for bootlegging due to the O'Banion setup, and afterwards abandoned his life of crime.
